Our Students Say...

"Service Learning has impacted every area of my life, this includes academic achievement. I am much more committed to excelling in school and I have learned a lot of valuable skills that will help me excel in any area."

— Education Major

"Service learning has more than proved itself to me to be a great experience for anyone. The communication and problem solving skills it forces you to sharpen are valuable to anyone in any career... I will use the skills I learned this semester for the rest of my life."

— Former Intern

"The contributions I made to the program pale in comparison to the personal rewards I took with me. For starters, the program exposed me to issues and people I would probably not have encountered otherwise. It opened my eyes. And as a result, I feel I have gained a more worldly knowledge of America than many people."

— Supervising Intern

"The program provided overwhelming personal growth. Not only did I have to deal with children and all the problems and headaches, but above all else I reaped the joys that come with working with children."

— Supervising Intern

"The communication skills, organizational skills, and management skills I gained are applicable to any person seeking a professional career in any field...."

— Supervising Intern

"The time I spent with Service Learning is something I’d never trade for anything in the world. . . . I got more out of it than I could possibly have put into it in such a short time. . . . Because of Service Learning, I feel I have some sense of direction in my life."

— MIC 484 Intern

"Learning to be more confident in a leadership role is definitely one thing that I have accomplished through this internship. . . . This has been a great experience and one of my favorite classes because of the exciting and unusual things you get to do in the class and I would recommend that every student take at least one Service Learning internship...."

— PLB 484 Intern

"My experiences teaching at Salt River Elementary through the Service Learning Program are among the most important I have had in college. Through the past semester, teaching has allowed me to open my eyes to a world I had never seen while learning so much in such a small amount of time. Though I went into the classroom to teach 6th graders about Physical Geography, I leave Salt River feeling the students and the school were a better educator to me than I was to them... My experiences there were unforgettable and are among the best in my years at Arizona State."

— Psychology Major

"Because of the Service Learning Program, I have been inspired by exceptional children and mentored by wonderful faculty and administrators. I have also become a part of a close network of students. Service Learning has made it possible to reach out to the Phoenix community and it has helped me find my place in the ASU community."

— Communication Major

"The Service Learning Program is one of the best programs I have ever been involved in. Not only are college students learning and growing through their internship, but at-risk children are also getting a new view on life."

— Justice Studies Major

"Students come away from the courses with a better sense of themselves and an awareness of those in the community who need the time and energy of a dedicated person in order to learn to read, to write a simple sentence, or to trust a new friend."

— Communication Major

"I have never been more involved in the community than I am now. I am very grateful because Service Learning has taught me a great lesson in humility and kindness towards my fellow man and especially children."
